CLARENCE EDWARD JOHNS, ‘42

Clarence Edward Johns was born in a two room house on Bailey Road during the Depression. When he was only 17, having lied about his age, Mr. Johns volunteered for the draft and served as a Marine in the Third Marine Division in the South Pacific, surviving the fierce battle of Iwo Jima. After the war he attended The Ohio State University on the GI Bill and earned a degree in civil engineering. After graduation he hitch-hiked from Ohio to California and landed his first engineering job. Mr. Johns relocated to Detroit, Michigan, in the mid 1950s and opened his own design and engineering firm, Industrial Building Panels, which he still operates today at the age of 87. He has two grown children who live in the metro Detroit area and two granddaughters, one a science and math major at Michigan Technological University, and the other an aspiring model.
